What it costs

What dryer vent cleaning costs in Marshall.

The same prices as everywhere we work: dryer vent cleaning is $199, normally $298, with a year of Comfort+ membership included, or $199 added to an air duct cleaning.

Dryer vent cleaning, a year of Comfort+ membership included

Dryer vent cleaning, added to an air duct cleaning

$199

The price covers the whole dryer vent line, from the back of the dryer to the hood outside, with camera photos of what we find, a dated invoice, and before and after photos of your line when we can get a clear shot. Anything past the cleaning, like a new hose or a guard on the hood, you get the price first.

With Comfort+ membership, $199 a year covers the dryer vent cleaning every year, plus a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit, and we tell you when each one is due.

What’s different in Marshall

Basement laundries in the old village, laundry rooms by the garage on the newer streets north of Main.

Marshall’s oldest houses predate the clothes dryer by decades. The County’s plan for the village dates about 20 houses on Anderson Avenue to the 1920s through the mid 1940s, with Craftsman bungalows of the same era along Winchester Road. In houses like those the dryer usually landed in the basement or a back room, and the dryer vent line took the shortest way through a wall. The weak spot is behind the machine: an old foil or vinyl accordion hose, crushed and holding lint in every fold.

North of Main Street the plan puts many houses between the 1960s and the 1990s, and about half the homes in 20115 went up from 1970 through 1999. A laundry room from that era often sits off the kitchen or by the garage, and the dryer vent line crosses a joist bay or follows a ceiling on its way to an exterior wall. Every elbow in that run collects lint.

The dryer is usually electric: under one owner home in a hundred in the ZIP heats with natural gas, against about six in ten on electricity and one in five on propane. Where there’s a propane tank in the yard the dryer sometimes runs on it, and on a propane dryer the combustion exhaust has no other exit than that line, lint and all. Keep a working carbon monoxide alarm on that floor; Fauquier Fire Rescue’s public education page has a request form.

On the big lots past the service district, with pasture or woods out back, the dryer vent hood usually sits low on a side or rear wall, right where a wren or a field mouse goes looking, and a flap that hangs open lets them in. The cleaning runs right out to the hood, and the flap gets checked so it closes.

When it’s due

When a dryer vent needs cleaning in Marshall.

A propane dryer that needs two cycles

When a propane dryer stops drying in one run, lint is narrowing the only way out for the burner’s exhaust as well as the hot air. Get the line cleaned before the next heavy laundry day, and test the nearest carbon monoxide alarm.

Towels take two cycles

The first thing most people notice. When the dryer vent is packed, the damp air has nowhere to go, so the clothes stay wet and the dryer runs hot.

It’s been a year

Fire departments around Northern Virginia say once a year, and sooner if clothes start taking longer to dry. If you can’t remember the last dryer vent cleaning, it’s due.

Choosing who cleans it

How to pick a dryer vent cleaning company in Marshall.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you, us included.

  1. Do they leave the dryer hose straight when they push the machine back?

Sliding a dryer back against the wall is how a clean line gets a kink on day one. Ask that the hose be left without crushes or sags, and on a propane dryer, that the flexible gas connector gets a look before it goes back.

  2. Do they clean the whole line, end to end?

Brushing the first few feet from the laundry room isn’t a dryer vent cleaning. Ask whether they clean from the back of the dryer to the hood outside, and how they get the lint out of the house instead of pushing it further down.

  3. Do they show you what’s inside the line?

Camera photos of the inside of your dryer vent line are how you know it needed cleaning, and before and after photos are how you know the job was done. Ask to see them, and for a dated invoice if your HOA wants proof.
