The flap under the deck barely moves
Run the dryer and look at the hood from below the deck. If the flap hardly lifts, or there’s a drift of grey lint in the joists around it, the line is packed and due for a dryer vent cleaning.
Dryer vent cleaning is $199, normally $298, with a year of Comfort+ membership included, or $199 added to an air duct cleaning.

What it costs
The same prices as everywhere we work: dryer vent cleaning is $199, normally $298, with a year of Comfort+ membership included, or $199 added to an air duct cleaning.
Dryer vent cleaning, a year of Comfort+ membership included
$199, normally $298
Dryer vent cleaning, added to an air duct cleaning
$199
The price covers the whole dryer vent line, from the back of the dryer to the hood outside, with camera photos of what we find, a dated invoice, and before and after photos of your line when we can get a clear shot. Anything past the cleaning, like a new hose or a guard on the hood, you get the price first.
With Comfort+ membership, $199 a year covers the dryer vent cleaning every year, plus a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit, and we tell you when each one is due.
What’s different in Centreville
Nearly half of Centreville’s homes are townhouses, most built between 1980 and 1999, so the route your dryer vent takes depends on where the builder put the laundry. With the washer and dryer on the lowest level, the dryer vent is usually a short run out the back wall, often coming out beneath the deck. With the laundry up on a bedroom floor, it crosses the ceiling to the back wall or climbs through the attic to the roof.
Beneath a deck is a tougher spot than it looks. Lint blown out of the hood settles in the joists and the stone below, leaves pile up against the flap, and snow can bank around it in a hard winter. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue’s dryer safety tips ask for exactly what that blocks: an exhaust that isn’t restricted, and an outdoor vent flap that opens while the dryer is running.
Fairfax County keeps two fire stations in Centreville: Station 17, a volunteer station on Old Centreville Road, and Station 38, West Centreville, on O’Day Drive. Beyond the yearly cleaning in the box below, the department’s list has one habit worth keeping in a house with a long line: turn the dryer off when you leave home or go to bed, so a load never runs with nobody there to notice.
About three in ten Centreville homes are single-family houses, where the laundry is often on the main floor and the dryer vent run is shorter. Shorter isn’t the same as clear: the hose behind the dryer gets crushed against the wall and sags where the lint collects, and it’s the first thing the tech looks at.

When it’s due
Run the dryer and look at the hood from below the deck. If the flap hardly lifts, or there’s a drift of grey lint in the joists around it, the line is packed and due for a dryer vent cleaning.
A townhouse dryer vent runs a long way to reach the outside, often to the roof or across a ceiling to the back wall. A long run fills faster than a short one, so once a year matters more here.
The first thing most people notice. When the dryer vent is packed, the damp air has nowhere to go, so the clothes stay wet and the dryer runs hot.
The dryer vent, locally
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue tells every household to clean the lint out of the dryer vent pipe once a year, sooner if clothes are taking longer to dry, and to have a gas dryer checked by a professional. Source.

Choosing who cleans it
Questions to ask anybody who quotes you, us included.
When the dryer vent ends beneath a deck, that’s where the lint and leaves pile up. Ask whether they clean the whole line from the dryer to the hood and clear the vent flap outside, not just the first few feet behind the machine.
Brushing the first few feet from the laundry room isn’t a dryer vent cleaning. Ask whether they clean from the back of the dryer to the hood outside, and how they get the lint out of the house instead of pushing it further down.
Camera photos of the inside of your dryer vent line are how you know it needed cleaning, and before and after photos are how you know the job was done. Ask to see them, and for a dated invoice if your HOA wants proof.

Questions
Once a year, and sooner if loads start taking longer to dry; that’s Fairfax County Fire and Rescue’s advice for every household. A townhouse line that crosses a ceiling or climbs to the roof gives lint a lot of places to settle, so it’s the one to keep on schedule.
Yes. Tell us when you book that it’s a roof line and how many floors up the hood is, so the tech brings the right ladder. We clean the full length and check the roof hood for packed lint and nesting material.
The dryer vent cleaning is the same job. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue also asks that a gas dryer get a professional check of its gas line and connection, to make sure both are intact and not leaking.
