What it costs

What an AC tune-up costs in Quantico.

One price per system, $99. We go through it before a Northern Virginia July finds the weak part for you. Anything it turns up is priced in writing before any work, and if it can wait, we say so.

AC tune-up, one system

$99

Furnace tune-up, one system

$99

Heat pump, boiler or ductless mini split tune-up, one system

$99

Comfort+ membership, a cooling maintenance visit every spring included

$199 a year

A house with two systems books two tune-ups, one for each, and a heat pump or a ductless mini split is the same $99 a system. The heating side, a furnace or a boiler, gets its own tune-up in the fall at the same price.

With Comfort+ membership at $199 a year, the cooling maintenance visit comes every spring, along with a heating maintenance visit, a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection and a dryer vent cleaning.

What’s different in Quantico

Quantico cooling: warm river nights, plaster ceilings and small apartment buildings.

The closest weather station sits at the Marine Corps air station, 1.6 miles south-southwest of the Town on the same Potomac shoreline. Its 1991 to 2020 normals put the average July high at 88 degrees and the average July low near 71, so most summer nights never cool the house enough to rest the air conditioner. A system that runs into the small hours all July should start the season with a clean coil and its full airflow.

The Census survey estimates about 370 homes in the Town, roughly a quarter from before 1940 and close to a third from the 1960s. A house from the 1920s or 1930s went up decades before anyone cooled a home with ducts, so where central air came later, the air handler often landed in the attic over plaster ceilings. A condensate line that clogs up there can let water through onto a ceiling close to ninety years old. Clearing that line is part of every tune-up.

More than half the Town’s homes sit in duplexes and small apartment buildings, where cooling usually means a split system per unit: an air handler in a closet, a condenser on a pad outside. Close to four in ten occupied homes here heat with electricity, often through a heat pump, and a heat pump tune-up is the same $99 a system.

On June 29, 2012, the air station logged heat indices of 110 to 114, and the derecho that tore through the same day gusted to 66 mph there. In August 2021 a thunderstorm blew a tree down on Fuller Road, the road Town residents take in from Route 1. After a blow like that, look at the condenser before the cooling goes back on: a branch on the top grille, leaves packed into the fins, the unit shoved off its pad. Call us after a storm and we’ll check it all.

When to book it

When an AC tune-up is worth booking in Quantico.

It’s still running at midnight and the rooms are warm

With July nights near 71, a healthy system should still pull the house down by morning. If yours runs all night and loses ground anyway, a packed coil, a clogged filter or a tired fan motor is the usual cause.

Before the first hot week

A weak capacitor is a small fix on a mild day in April. Found by a July heat wave, it’s a house with no cooling.

Nobody remembers the last one

Or the sticker on the unit is from the last owners. That’s most houses, and it’s reason enough.

Choosing who tunes it up

How to pick the best AC tune-up company in Quantico.

Questions to ask anybody who books you, us included.

  1. Will they write up each unit on its own?

If you own a duplex or a small building in Town, ask for one write-up per system, with any repair priced in writing, so you can plan for the whole building.

  2. What does the price cover, and is it per system?

Ask what gets cleaned and what gets checked, and whether a second system costs extra. A number with no list behind it is hard to hold anybody to.

  3. Do they write down what they found?

Ask for the findings in writing, with a price on anything that needs fixing and an honest word on what can wait. A tune-up you never see written down is one you take on faith.

  4. Do they find the leak before they sell refrigerant?

An air conditioner doesn’t use up refrigerant. Low means it’s leaking somewhere, and a company that tops it up every spring is selling you the same refrigerant twice.

Mr. Moises Rojas was great! A very experienced HVAC technician who carefully examined our very old AC system, and helped guide us through options for our original AC system. Highly recommended!

Questions

AC tune-up questions from Quantico.

I’m in on-post housing. Can SwiftPro do my AC tune-up?

No. Liberty Military Housing owns and maintains the family homes on Marine Corps Base Quantico, so an on-post air conditioner is theirs to service; call your housing office. Our tune-ups in 22134 are for the Town’s own houses and apartments.

I rent in the Town. Who books the AC tune-up?

Usually your landlord. Virginia’s landlord and tenant law has the owner keep any air conditioning they supply in good and safe working order, and the Census survey puts about five of every six occupied homes in the Town as rented. It’s $99 a system whoever books it.

How much is an AC tune-up in Quantico?

$99 per system, the same for a central air conditioner, a heat pump or a ductless mini split. A house with two systems books two. If the tune-up turns up a repair, you get its price in writing before any work, and you decide.

How often should an AC get a tune-up?

Once a year, in the spring, before the first heat wave. The heating side gets its own visit in the fall. The filter needs attention more often, every one to three months, and it’s the cheapest thing on the list.
