Strange Plumbing Noises That Sound Like HVAC, and Where to Look

Strange plumbing noises often get blamed on the HVAC, and the other way around. This skit bounces between a kitchen disposal, a dug-up sewer line and an outdoor AC unit to make the point: find the source first.

What you’re seeing in this video

The setup is a sound that could be anything. A SwiftPro tech in a black beanie runs water into a kitchen sink with a disposal under it.

Cut to a yard, where a tech in a gray cap and red gloves has dug a trench down to a buried sewer pipe and its cleanout, the capped pipe that gives access to the line for clearing clogs.

Then two techs work at an AC condenser behind a townhouse fence. Three trades, one punchline: the noise you hear isn't always coming from where you think.

Why it matters in your house

  • Gurgling at the kitchen sink when another fixture drains usually points to a venting or drain problem, nothing to do with your air conditioning.
  • Banging when a faucet shuts off is water hammer in the supply pipes. Buzzing or clicking from outside the house is more likely the AC condenser.
  • Note when the sound happens: during a flush, when the AC starts, at night. That one detail saves a tech a lot of guessing.

Why does my kitchen sink gurgle?

A gurgle means air is being pulled through the trap as water drains. Usually the drain is partly clogged further down, or the plumbing vent that lets air into the drain lines is blocked. If it only happens when the dishwasher or washer drains, the line is likely restricted. Go easy on it and have a plumber clear it before it backs up.
