Signs You Need to Repipe, Told by the Pipes You Drink From

The signs you need to repipe are repeat leaks, falling water pressure, discolored water and a plumber who keeps coming back. The joke in this skit is someone realizing she's been drinking from the old pipes.

What you’re seeing in this video

A kitchen skit. A woman with her hair pulled back, shown as a cutout sticker, reacts and sips from a can while the joke on screen lands: these are the pipes she's been drinking from.

Behind her, a SwiftPro tech works under the kitchen sink behind a sheet of foil. That foil is a heat shield. It goes up when a torch is used inside a cabinet, so the wood and finish around the pipe don't scorch.

The kitchen sink is a common place to see what a house's water lines are made of, because the supply pipes come up right there under the cabinet.

Why it matters in your house

  • Repeat leaks are the clearest sign. One pinhole is bad luck. Three in a couple of years means the pipe wall is thinning everywhere.
  • Brown or rusty water when you first open a tap, especially in the morning, points to corroding steel pipe or fittings somewhere in the system.
  • Pressure that drops a little more each year, at every faucet, often means scale is narrowing the inside of old pipes.

What does a whole house repipe involve?

New water lines replace the old ones from where the water enters the house out to every fixture. The plumber opens small sections of wall or ceiling to run the new pipe, ties it in, tests it, and the old lines are cut out or left dry. Patching the walls is a separate step, so ask who handles it.
