What you’re seeing in this video

A tech in a black beanie and hoodie stands on an orange ladder, back to the camera, working up in the open joists of an unfinished basement ceiling.

A bearded tech in safety glasses with a headlamp cuts through a section of black pipe with a reciprocating saw.

An unfinished basement ceiling is a map of the house: supply trunks, return ducts, drain lines, water pipes, the gas line and wiring all crossing the same joists. Knowing which is which before the blade touches anything is a big part of the craft.

Why it matters in your house

  • Planning to finish your basement? Have an HVAC tech look first. Moving a duct or adding a return is far easier before drywall goes up.
  • Never cut a pipe you can't identify. Black pipe can be a plastic drain or a steel gas line, and only one of those is safe to saw.
  • Finished basement ceilings should keep access panels at shutoffs and cleanouts. A tech who can reach a valve fixes things faster than one who has to open drywall.

Should I have my HVAC checked before finishing a basement?

Yes. Before the ceiling closes in, a tech can add supply and return vents so the new space actually heats and cools, reroute ducts that hang too low, and make sure the furnace and water heater keep the clearance and air they need. Fixing that after drywall costs far more.
