Rooftop HVAC Work in Summer, Fitting Ductwork at a Unit in Full Sun

Rooftop HVAC work in summer means sheet metal hot enough to sting through gloves and no shade anywhere. This tech is fitting ductwork at a rooftop unit's opening while the sun beats down.

What you’re seeing in this video

Point-of-view footage: red gloves and olive work pants, kneeling at a rooftop unit's opening in bright sun, fitting sheet metal ductwork into place.

A rooftop unit sits on a curb over openings in the roof deck. Supply and return ducts drop through those openings into the building, and the sheet metal transition between unit and duct has to line up and seal tight.

The on-screen joke says the heat is getting to him. On a dark roof in July, the surface runs far hotter than the air, and metal panels left in the sun get too hot to hold bare-handed.

Why it matters in your house

  • If you manage a building, schedule rooftop maintenance in spring and fall. Summer service still happens, but a July breakdown means a hot building while you wait for parts.
  • A rooftop unit that blows warm while running often has a dirty condenser coil, packed with cottonwood fluff and dust. Rooftop coils need cleaning at least once a year.
  • Roof edges and open hatches are real fall hazards. A contractor working your roof should bring fall protection and keep people back from the edge.

How hot does a roof get in summer?

Hotter than most people think. A dark roof membrane in direct sun can run 50 to 80 degrees above the air temperature, so a 95-degree afternoon puts the surface near 150 or beyond. Unit panels and sheet metal soak up that heat too. White or reflective roofs stay much cooler.
