How Hot Does an Attic Get? A Tech, a Blower and an Attic Fan Dial

How hot does an attic get? Under a dark roof in a Northern Virginia summer, well past 110 degrees by afternoon. This tech is working on a blower up there, beside an attic fan that can't keep up.

What you’re seeing in this video

A young tech in a red hoodie with a fur-lined hood works on an air handler's blower in a hot attic, with selfie shots of him looking exactly as good as you'd expect.

The camera then closes in on an adjustable attic fan thermostat mounted to a rafter. Its dial sets the temperature at which a powered attic fan switches on.

The joke is a friend telling him he is not maintaining and suggesting burritos instead. Underneath, it's a fair question about how much that fan is really doing.

Why it matters in your house

  • A powered attic fan can only pull attic air down toward the outdoor temperature, never below it. On a 95-degree day, the best it can manage is a still-hot attic.
  • If your ceiling has gaps around lights, the attic hatch or the bath fan, a powered attic fan can pull cooled air out of your house. Sealing those leaks comes first.
  • Air handlers in hot attics work harder and age faster. Keep the condensate drain clear and the filter fresh, because an attic leak shows up as a ceiling stain.

Do powered attic fans actually help?

Sometimes, a little. They can lower attic temperature on a sunny day, but if the ceiling below isn't air sealed, they suck conditioned air out of the house and your AC runs more. Sealing the attic floor and adding insulation usually does more, and good ridge and soffit vents often handle the rest.
