A Trane Rooftop Unit Set on Its Curb by Crane

A Trane rooftop unit, or RTU, is heating and cooling in one cabinet that sits on a curb over a building's ducts. Swapping one takes a crane, a lift plan and a crew on the roof, and this clip shows all three.

What you’re seeing in this video

The words "An average day in HVAC" sit over the opening drone shot, with the quotes doing the joking. A crane truck parked in the lot reaches up to the roof, where a tech in a hi-vis vest stands on top of the old unit and rigs it to the hook.

The old unit swings down and lands beside a stake-bed truck in the lot. Then the new Trane rises over the bare trees on straps, and techs in hard hats guide it by hand onto the curb, the metal frame that seals the unit to the opening in the roof.

Once it's down, six or more techs open the side panels and get to work on the electrical and control sections, with a run of white PVC pipe laid out on the stone beside them.

Why it matters in your house

  • Crane day runs on a schedule set weeks ahead. The lift itself is short, but the lot, the street access and the roof all have to be clear, and wind can move the date.
  • Rooftop units sit in full sun, wind and snow with no shelter, so filters, belts and coils need regular service to reach the end of their working life.
  • Swapping like for like on the existing curb is usually the cleanest path, since the ductwork below stays put and the building keeps its layout.

What is a Trane RTU?

RTU stands for rooftop unit. It's a packaged system: the compressor, coils, blower and often a gas heat section live in one cabinet on the roof and feed the ducts through the curb underneath. Trane builds them for commercial buildings of every kind. Replacing one usually means a crane, a matching curb and a crew to wire, pipe and start it up.
