Sealing Ductwork Connections, With the Sound Turned Up

Sealing ductwork connections stops conditioned air from leaking out before it reaches a room. This clip is the sound of it on a commercial roof: foil tape crackling down on a rooftop unit's duct connection.

What you’re seeing in this video

It's filmed first person on a roof. Hands in work gloves press foil tape onto the foil-lined duct connection where a rooftop unit meets its curb, the raised frame that holds the unit over the openings in the roof. The tape crackles as it's smoothed flat, which is the whole ASMR appeal.

The same hands then strip and join the control wiring that tells the unit when to run, with a cordless drill sitting nearby on the roof deck.

Why it matters in your house

  • Duct air leakage at the equipment connection wastes the most air, since that's where the blower pushes hardest. The same goes for the plenum on your furnace or attic air handler.
  • How to seal ductwork the right way: clean the surface, then use mastic or UL-listed foil tape. Ordinary cloth duct tape lets go within a few seasons.
  • Wiring gets the same attention. Loose or poorly joined control wires cause units that won't start or short cycle, and they're easy to prevent at install.

What's the best way to seal ductwork connections?

Mechanically fasten the joint first with screws or straps, then seal it. Mastic, a thick brushed-on paste, is the most durable choice for most joints. Foil tape rated for HVAC works well on clean, dry metal. Cloth duct tape doesn't belong on ducts at all, despite the name, because the adhesive dries out.
