Brazing vs Soldering: Why Refrigerant Lines Get Brazed

In the brazing vs soldering question, refrigerant lines get brazed because the joint has to hold high pressure, heat and constant vibration. Brazing runs hotter, above 840 degrees, with a stronger filler metal than solder.

What you’re seeing in this video

Three brazing jobs in a row. First, a torch works a joint at the compressor inside an outdoor condenser with its panels opened. Next, a tech with a short dark beard brazes copper overhead near a furnace in a basement.

The last shot is the service valve on a condenser, wrapped in a wet rag while the flame works the joint beside it. That rag soaks up heat so the valve's internal seals don't cook. Each joint gets heated until the filler metal flows into the fitting and seals the copper.

Why it matters in your house

  • Refrigerant lines can run at several hundred psi, and the outdoor unit vibrates every time it starts. Soft solder joints can crack under that, so brazing is the standard.
  • A leaking joint shows up as weak cooling and a system that needs refrigerant added. Recharging without finding the leak just buys time.
  • Ask your installer if they flow nitrogen while brazing. It keeps the inside of the copper clean and is a quiet sign of careful work.

Why not just solder AC refrigerant lines?

Solder melts at lower temperatures and makes a weaker joint. AC lines carry refrigerant under high pressure, get hot on the discharge side and shake with every compressor start. Brazing uses a filler alloy that melts above 840 degrees and creates a joint that can handle that for decades. Solder still has its place on water pipes.
