Snake in the Crawl Space: The Weirdest Thing This HVAC Tech Ever Found
Finding a snake in a crawl space is less rare than it sounds. This tech's weirdest find was a black racer, a common harmless Virginia snake he carried out by hand while his coworkers kept their distance.

What you’re seeing in this video
A young tech in a black SwiftPro polo sits on the back step of an open SwiftPro van, shelves of parts behind him and a yellow fan on the grass. Off camera, someone asks for the weirdest thing he's ever found on the job.
His answer is a snake, a little black racer. He says his coworkers weren't keen on going in after it, so he went in, grabbed it and carried it outside, adding that they don't hurt animals. He says he has video to prove it.

What they say on camera
The weirdest thing I've ever found at a cross space number one for my top one would be a snake. A light snake. Yay. Big little black racer.
Lots of fun. My co-workers were afraid to work in the crawl space in the attic space. I just went in there. I grabbed it.
I do have video evidence and I took it outside. We don't hurt animals.
Why it matters in your house
Snakes follow mice. If one turns up in your crawl space, there's probably a rodent problem and a gap letting both in. Sealing vents and openings fixes the cause.
Ductwork in crawl spaces gets chewed, crushed and disconnected by animals. A tech who's down there anyway should check the duct runs and insulation.
Leave snake handling to someone who can identify the species. Northern Virginia has copperheads too, and they aren't something to grab.
Is a snake in my crawl space dangerous?
Most snakes found in Northern Virginia crawl spaces are harmless rat snakes or black racers hunting mice. Copperheads do live here, though, so don't reach for one you can't identify. Call a wildlife pro to remove it, then seal foundation vents and gaps. When the rodents go, the snakes stop visiting.
