Persistence in the Skilled Trades, Shown on a Rooftop Curb Job

Persistence in the skilled trades looks like this clip: a crane lift, a heavy curb adapter, and two techs sealing it on a roof until it's watertight. Skill like that is earned one roof at a time.

What you’re seeing in this video

The clip opens in a parking lot. Crane straps lift a roof curb adapter off a flatbed trailer, a big sheet metal piece that rides up to the roof edge while the crew on top waits for it.

Up top, two SwiftPro techs set it in place and seal the seams. One wears a royal blue long-sleeve shirt, a cap and a tool belt; the other is a younger tech in a black polo and jeans.

A curb adapter lets a new rooftop unit sit on an old curb built for a different footprint. Get the fit or the seal wrong and rain finds its way into the building below. The words on screen are about grit, but the work underneath is careful layout and caulk.

Why it matters in your house

  • If your business has a rooftop unit near the end, ask whether the new one fits the existing curb. An adapter can save cutting a fresh opening and re-roofing around it.
  • Water stains on a ceiling tile right under a rooftop unit often point to a curb seal or a clogged condensate drain, not a roof leak somewhere else.
  • Rigging, sheet metal and sealing are learned across dozens of roofs. That's why commercial experience matters when you hire someone to set equipment over your tenants' heads.

How long does it take to become a licensed HVAC tech in Virginia?

Most people start as an apprentice and log field hours under a licensed tech. A common route to a Virginia journeyman card is four years of work experience plus 240 hours of classroom training, then a state exam. Master comes after time as a journeyman. Persistence is most of it.
