Married to an HVAC Tech: Brazes a Filter Drier, Can't Find the Ketchup

Anyone married to an HVAC tech knows the bit: he'll track down a refrigerant leak in a condenser but can't find ketchup in the fridge. The repair on screen is a filter drier being brazed in.

What you’re seeing in this video

Two techs work at an outdoor AC condenser with its service panel off. One, in a black mesh cap, earbuds and a black hoodie, holds a torch to the copper line; the other stands by in a hooded jacket with a red rag and pliers.

The part going in is a filter drier, the small metal canister in the liquid line. It traps moisture and debris inside the refrigerant circuit, and it gets replaced whenever that circuit is opened for a repair.

Brazing joins copper to copper at well over a thousand degrees. A wet rag is the old trick for keeping that heat away from nearby valves and wiring.

Why it matters in your house

  • If an AC repair opens the refrigerant lines and nobody mentions a new filter drier, ask. Moisture left inside turns into acid that eats a compressor from the inside out.
  • Ice on the copper lines, hissing near the outdoor unit or an AC that needs a recharge every summer all point to a leak. Topping it off without finding it just pushes the bill down the road.
  • A good repair ends with a vacuum pulled on the system before refrigerant goes back in. That step takes time, and skipping it is how repairs fail early.

What is a filter drier on an AC?

It's a small canister on the liquid line, usually near the outdoor unit, packed with material that soaks up moisture and catches debris. Air conditioners hate water inside the refrigerant loop. Any time a tech cuts into that loop to fix a leak or replace a part, a new drier goes in.
