Parts of a Furnace: What's Inside and the Job Each Part Does

A gas furnace is a short chain of parts: inducer, igniter, gas valve, burners, flame sensor, heat exchanger and blower. If any one of them fails its check, the furnace stops, and a tech works down that chain.

What you’re seeing in this video

An open gas furnace sits in a basement mechanical room, with labels on screen pointing out two of the big parts: the heat exchanger and the blower motor.

The heat exchanger is the metal chamber the burner flames fire into. It gets hot and the house air passes over the outside of it, so flame and exhaust never mix with the air you breathe. The blower motor spins the fan that pushes that warmed air into your ducts.

Two techs in black hoodies work on the furnace and on the supply plenum, the sheet metal box on top where heated air leaves for the rest of the house.

Why it matters in your house

  • In order: the thermostat calls, the inducer fan clears the flue, a pressure switch confirms the draft, the igniter heats, the gas valve opens and the flame sensor proves the flame. Then the blower starts.
  • A cracked heat exchanger is the part to take seriously. It can let combustion gases into the airstream, which is why a tech inspects it on every heating visit.
  • Knowing the names helps you follow a repair quote. A bad igniter and a bad control board are very different bills, and you can ask which one failed its test.

What is the most important part of a furnace?

Ask a tech and you'll usually hear the heat exchanger, because it's the wall between fire and the air you breathe. The blower matters most for comfort, and the safety switches matter most for keeping it from running when something's wrong. A good inspection looks at all three, not just whether warm air comes out.
