Common Furnace Problems: Answering What Was Actually Wrong

Most no-heat calls trace back to a short list: airflow, ignition, a flame sensor, a pressure switch, an electrical part or a worn-out blower. The useful answer is which one, and why it failed.

What you’re seeing in this video

The clip answers a customer's question, what was actually wrong with the furnace, with two pictures. First, an old furnace blower housing sits on a patio under a list of signs that a system is due for replacement, led by age and frequent breakdowns.

Then a tech in a black SwiftPro shirt and red gloves kneels at a newly installed furnace in a closet, tools on the floor and a roll of foil tape at hand for sealing the duct connections.

Why it matters in your house

  • Ignition problems are the most common winter call: a cracked hot surface igniter, a dirty flame sensor, or a pressure switch that won't close because the vent or inducer motor has trouble.
  • Ask your tech to show you the failed part or the reading that proved it. A blower capacitor out of spec or an igniter with no continuity is a clear answer you can check.
  • When the repair list keeps growing on a furnace past 15 years, the honest answer to what's wrong can be the whole system. That's when replacing beats chasing the next part.

Why is my furnace running but not heating?

If the blower runs but the air is cool, the burners either aren't staying lit or never lit. That's often an igniter, a flame sensor, a pressure switch or a gas supply issue. Check that the thermostat is set to heat and the filter isn't packed. If both look fine, it's time for a tech with a meter.
