What you’re seeing in this video

The question on this one is what is that, and the answer is the old furnace cabinet as two techs carry it out through an unfinished basement, one in a black hoodie and grey cap, the other in a SwiftPro polo with a headlamp.

The finished install sits on a tiled floor: a new Rheem gas furnace with white PVC vent pipes, a condensate pump at its base and a red service switch on the wall, which lets a tech cut power right at the unit.

Why it matters in your house

  • White PVC vent pipes are the sign of a high efficiency gas furnace. Its exhaust is cool and wet enough to run through plastic instead of a metal flue.
  • That exhaust makes water, so the furnace needs a drain or a condensate pump like the one at this unit's base. If the pump quits, water backs up, so it gets a look at every tune-up.
  • The red switch on the wall cuts power at the furnace itself, so whoever services it can shut it off without walking to the breaker panel.

Why does a new gas furnace need a condensate pump?

A high efficiency gas furnace pulls so much heat out of its exhaust that water condenses inside it. That water has to go somewhere. If there's no floor drain close by, a small pump at the base pushes it through a tube to a drain or sink. Keep the tube clear and listen for the pump running.
