Furnace Flame Color: What a Blue vs Yellow Flame Tells a Tech

A healthy gas furnace flame is steady and mostly blue. A lazy yellow or orange flame, or one that lifts, flickers or rolls out of the burner, points to a combustion problem a technician should check soon.

What you’re seeing in this video

Here's a gas furnace in a basement with both front panels off, so you can see the whole layout at once: the row of burners, the gas valve that feeds them, the control board that runs the startup sequence, and the blower down below.

Text on screen walks through what odd flame behavior can point to: ignition trouble, a flame sensor that isn't reading the flame, or a gas supply problem. Those are the same things a tech is judging when they look through the burner opening on a heating visit.

Why it matters in your house

  • Yellow or orange flames often mean the burners aren't getting the right air mix, from dust, rust flakes or a venting problem. Incomplete combustion can make carbon monoxide, so don't sit on it.
  • A brief orange flicker on the first cold morning of the year can just be dust burning off. If it doesn't settle down within a few minutes, shut the furnace off and call.
  • Keep a carbon monoxide alarm on every level of the house and outside the bedrooms. It's the warning that works when nobody's looking at the flame.

Is a yellow flame in a furnace dangerous?

It can be. Yellow usually means the gas isn't burning cleanly, and incomplete combustion can produce carbon monoxide. Don't try to adjust the air shutters or burners yourself. Turn the furnace off at the thermostat, make sure your CO alarms work, and have a tech inspect the burners, venting and heat exchanger before you run it again.
