What you’re seeing in this video

A young tech in a navy work jacket runs an impact driver into a furnace panel, the quick rattle of screws coming loose. Next, a gloved hand saws through white PVC pipe, the kind used for venting and condensate drains on high-efficiency furnaces.

Then a tech with a shaved head and a headlamp holds a red vacuum hose to a wall vent, kneeling on a teal floor mat that protects the floor. Stacked tool boxes sit close by, everything within reach.

Why it matters in your house

  • The impact driver is the most-used tool on the van. Panels come off and go back on dozens of times a week, and a good tech puts every screw back.
  • PVC on a furnace means a high-efficiency unit that vents through the wall. Those pipes need clean cuts and solid glue joints so exhaust stays outside.
  • The vacuum pump in the tool list matters most where you can't hear it: it pulls moisture out of new refrigerant lines before an AC is charged.

Why does my furnace have white PVC pipes?

PVC pipes mean a high-efficiency condensing furnace. It pulls so much heat out of the exhaust that what's left is cool enough for plastic pipe, so one pipe carries exhaust out and often a second brings combustion air in. Keep the outside ends clear of snow and leaves, or the furnace will shut itself off.
