Clamp Meter HVAC Spotlight: How Techs Read Amp Draw

A clamp meter reads how much current a wire is carrying just by closing its jaws around it, with nothing disconnected. In this clamp meter HVAC spotlight, a tech uses one in an air handler and at an outdoor AC unit.

What you’re seeing in this video

A young tech in a navy work jacket opens the control panel on an air handler and closes a clamp meter's jaws around a single wire. On-screen text explains the trick: it reads current without disconnecting anything.

Then a yellow digital clamp meter reads a wire at the outdoor condenser. Out there it's usually checking the compressor and the fan motor, the two biggest power users in the system.

Why it matters in your house

  • Every motor has a rated amp number on its data plate. Readings well above it can point to a failing capacitor, a dirty coil or worn bearings before anything quits.
  • A tune-up that includes amp readings catches electrical trouble while it's still a cheap part, before it becomes a burned-out compressor.
  • Clamp around one wire, not the whole cable. The currents in the two conductors cancel out and the meter reads close to zero.

What should the amp draw be on my AC?

It depends on the unit. The outdoor unit's data plate lists rated load amps for the compressor and full load amps for the fan. A healthy system running in normal weather usually draws below those numbers. Readings at or above them, or one leg far off from the other, tell a tech to dig deeper.
