HVAC Tech: Just Here for the Furnace, Whatever Else Is Going On

The HVAC tech is just here for the furnace, no matter what's happening upstairs. The soundtrack is household chaos, but the picture is two techs calmly working on an open gas furnace in an unfinished basement.

What you’re seeing in this video

Two techs in black jackets and caps stand at a gas furnace with its front panels off, under gray sheet metal ductwork in an unfinished basement. Tool bags sit open nearby and a drop cloth covers the floor in front of the unit.

Their backs are to the camera, heads down in the burner compartment. Over the top plays a meme audio of a kid refusing vegetables, which is the joke: the house can be loud, and the furnace still gets their full attention.

Why it matters in your house

  • A drop cloth in front of the furnace isn't fussiness. Furnace work shakes loose soot and dust, and a good tech keeps it off your floor.
  • With the panels off, a tech can check the burners, igniter, flame sensor and the vent connection. Those parts cause most no-heat calls in a Northern Virginia winter.
  • If your basement furnace is boxed in by storage, clear a few feet around it before the visit. It's faster and safer when nobody has to work around boxes.

What does an HVAC tech check on a gas furnace?

With the front panels off, they look at the burners and flame, clean the flame sensor, check the igniter, test the safety switches, inspect the venting and listen to the blower. They'll also look at the filter, and on a high efficiency furnace, the condensate drain and trap.
