How to Start a Career in HVAC, From a Tech Who Did It

To start a career in HVAC, most people begin as a helper or apprentice, earn EPA 608 certification and build hours toward a license. In this clip, a SwiftPro tech stands by his truck and tells how he got in.

What you’re seeing in this video

A SwiftPro tech with a shaved head and dark goatee stands in a parking lot, hands on his hips, in a black company polo and cargo pants with keys clipped to his belt. Behind him is a SwiftPro truck with a ladder rack on top.

He tells the story of where his professional life started and what he's learned since. It's a straight-to-camera talk, no job site, just a tech and the truck he works out of.

That truck is basically a rolling shop: ladders on top, parts and tools inside. Keeping it stocked is one of the first habits a new tech learns, so the fix can happen on the first trip.

Why it matters in your house

  • You don't need a four-year degree. Many techs start as helpers, some after a trade school program, and learn the rest on real jobs.
  • Get EPA Section 608 certified early. Handling refrigerant requires it, and having it makes you more useful on an install or service crew from week one.
  • Virginia licenses HVAC tradesmen at journeyman and master levels. Track your hours and training from the start, because they count toward the license.

How do I become an HVAC technician with no experience?

Apply for helper or apprentice jobs with local contractors, and say plainly that you want to learn. Show up on time, carry the ladder, ask questions. Take the EPA 608 exam in your first months. A trade school course speeds things up but isn't required to get hired. Mechanical curiosity and reliability count for more than a resume.
