Why it matters in your house

  • HVAC, plumbing and electrical work all start with paid on-the-job training, and Virginia licenses each trade at journeyman and master levels as you build hours.
  • Plumbing alone runs from tankless installs to excavated water and sewer lines. One trade can hold several careers, depending on what you like doing.
  • If you like fixing things, working outside some days and in attics on others, and seeing a finished job at the end of the day, talk to a local contractor about how they hire.

Are skilled trades a good career compared to college?

For a lot of people, yes. You start earning on day one instead of taking on loans, and experienced techs, lead installers and plumbers stay in demand because the work has to happen in person. It's physical, and the hours run long in peak season. If you like hands-on problem solving, it's a real path, not a fallback.
