How to Clean an Outside AC Unit: Rinse From the Inside Out

Spraying an outdoor AC from the outside pushes dirt deeper into the coil. Pros take the top and fan off and rinse from the inside out, so the debris washes away instead of packing in tighter.

What you’re seeing in this video

A SwiftPro tech in glasses and a black polo stands at an outdoor AC unit with its top removed and points out the mistake most homeowners make: spraying the coil from the outside in.

His approach is the reverse. With the fan and top off, he coats the coil with cleaner, lets it sit to loosen the grime, then rinses from inside the unit outward so the dirt leaves the way it came in.

What they say on camera

This is Diego with SwiftPro. This is the first step of us cleaning it. Most of the homeowners, all you guys can do is basically clean the outside, which isn't the best. It is good to help it a little bit, but sometimes when you're pushing water into from the outside in, you're basically putting more dirt into the coils.

So, what we do as technicians when we remove everything off, remove the fan, everything that we do is for the best way to clean it. And the best way to clean it is to clean it from the inside to the outside. So, all the debris, all the dirt is going straight out. We already put some soap and chemicals here to give it a nice cleaning.

We're giving it a little time to rinse off and everything, and then we're going to rinse it with water. So, that's basically what I'm going to do. So, right now, we're just going to go ahead and get underneath, and then we're just letting all this debris and all this dirt and everything off your system, so you guys can have a better, healthier coil for a lasting longer system. And that's the best plan we want you to have.

Thanks for watching.

Why it matters in your house

  • Should you hose off your AC unit? A gentle outside rinse helps a little, but a strong spray or a pressure washer drives dirt deeper and flattens fins. Low pressure only.
  • Before touching it, turn off power at the outdoor disconnect and the breaker. The fan can start on its own when the thermostat calls, and the parts inside carry high voltage.
  • Removing the top means unhooking the fan motor wires and lifting a heavy grille without kinking anything. That's the step worth leaving to a tech if you aren't comfortable with it.

How do I clean my outside AC unit myself?

Shut off power at the disconnect and the breaker. Clear leaves and sticks from around and inside the base. Spray a coil cleaner made for condensers, give it the time on the label, then rinse gently with a garden hose. Aim the water straight at the fins, not at an angle, and never use a pressure washer.
