AC Condenser Coil Cleaning for a Coil the Owner Thought Was Fine

If you can't see light through your outdoor coil's fins, it needs cleaning. Dirt packs in so evenly that a coil can look gray and normal from a few feet away while barely moving any air.

What you’re seeing in this video

The setup is a line every tech has heard: I don't think my AC coil needs cleaning. Then the camera goes close on that coil, and the fins are caked solid with a layer of dirt so thick the fin pattern disappears.

A tech's hand works a brush along the fins, peeling the mat away in strips, then a rinse washes out what the brush loosened. The bare metal underneath looks nothing like the before.

Why it matters in your house

  • Brush along the fins, top to bottom, never across them. The aluminum fins fold over at a touch, and a row of flattened fins blocks air just like dirt does.
  • Check your own coil by shining a flashlight through the fins from one side. If light passes easily, you're fine. If it looks like felt, plan a cleaning before the heat comes.
  • Dryer lint, grass clippings and cottonwood fluff are the usual culprits. If your dryer exhaust or mower discharge points at the unit, redirect it, or you'll be cleaning this every year.

Does my AC coil really need cleaning?

If it's been more than a year or two, probably. Look at the outdoor unit with the power off: matted fins, fuzz, leaves at the base or a gray film you can't see through all mean yes. A clean coil helps the system run cooler and use less power, and it's one of the cheapest ways to protect the compressor.
