A Wall Mounted Tankless Water Heater Going Up in a Basement

A wall mounted tankless water heater hangs on the basement wall instead of standing on the floor. Here a tech solders the copper that feeds it while gloved hands make the connections underneath, and white PVC vent pipe runs out the top.

What you’re seeing in this video

A tech in a black cap and gloves stands on a yellow ladder in an unfinished basement, torch in hand, soldering copper overhead. Below him, gloved hands tighten fittings into the bottom of the new unit, a white tankless heater hung flat on the wall with a small control panel on its face.

New copper water lines run down to it and white PVC vent pipe leaves from the top. The text on screen walks through the signs an old tank water heater is finished; the footage is the replacement going in.

Why it matters in your house

  • Wall mounted means the floor where a tank used to stand is free again, which matters in a tight utility room or a basement you plan to finish.
  • A gas tankless unit needs its own vent run and a gas line sized for it. Those two things decide whether it can go where the old tank was.
  • Hard water builds scale inside a tankless heat exchanger, so it needs descaling on a schedule. Service valves on the water lines make that a quick job.

Does a tankless water heater need a vent?

A gas one does. It burns fuel, so the exhaust has to go outside through its own vent, and many newer units vent through PVC pipe like the run in this clip. An electric tankless heater needs no vent, but it usually needs a big upgrade at the electrical panel.
