Why it matters in your house

  • No ducts means no duct losses. Mini splits work well for additions, garages turned into rooms, and upstairs spaces the main system never keeps comfortable.
  • Because a mini split is a heat pump, the same system heats in winter. Cold-climate models keep heating well through a Northern Virginia January.
  • Ceiling cassettes take more work to install than wall heads but disappear into the room. Ask which style fits the space before you settle on one.

Does a mini split heat as well as it cools?

Yes. A mini split is a heat pump, so a reversing valve flips the refrigerant flow and the outdoor unit pulls heat from outside air even when it's cold. Cold-climate models are rated to keep heating well below freezing, which covers almost every winter night here. Keep snow cleared off the outdoor unit and it'll keep up.
