Dirty Evaporator Coil and Blower Wheel: Where AC Dust Ends Up

Dust that gets past your filter lands on the blower wheel and the evaporator coil, the cold coil above the furnace. That coil is wet while the AC runs, so it catches dust like flypaper and slowly chokes airflow.

What you’re seeing in this video

A tech in a black cap and hoodie reaches into the cabinet that sits on top of the furnace in a mechanical room. A label on screen names it: the evaporator coil, the indoor half of your air conditioner.

Then comes a close-up of a blower wheel, the squirrel-cage fan that moves air through the whole system, with dust caked along its curved blades. Dust on those blades cuts how much air the fan can move.

Why it matters in your house

  • A dirty evaporator coil cuts airflow and can freeze up in summer. If you see ice on the copper lines or water pooling around the furnace, shut the AC off and call.
  • The coil's drain pan collects the dust that washes off with condensation. That sludge is what clogs drain lines and sends water through a ceiling or onto a basement floor.
  • Filter fit matters as much as filter rating. A snug filter changed on schedule is the cheapest way to keep this coil and the blower wheel clean.

How do I know if my evaporator coil is dirty?

You usually can't see it without opening the cabinet, so watch for symptoms: weaker airflow from the vents, the AC running longer, ice on the refrigerant lines, or water near the furnace. A tech can look at the coil face through an access panel or with a camera and tell you whether it needs cleaning.
