AC Condenser Inspection: Testing the Capacitor and Pressures

An AC condenser inspection is mostly readings, not looks. A tech tests the capacitor against its rating, measures amp draw on the compressor and fan, and reads refrigerant pressures to see how the system is really doing.

What you’re seeing in this video

It's raining outside a row of townhomes, and a young tech in a grey hoodie and backwards SwiftPro cap stands at one of the outdoor AC units with a clamp meter, testing the capacitor behind the open service panel.

At another condenser against a brick wall, a second tech connects refrigerant gauges to the service ports. Those hoses read the low side and high side pressures while the system runs.

Why it matters in your house

  • Capacitors are among the most common outdoor AC failures. A tech compares the measured microfarads to the rating printed on the side, and a weak one gets replaced before it strains the compressor or fan motor.
  • Amp draw works like the compressor's blood pressure. Readings above the nameplate point to dirty coils, a weak capacitor or a compressor that's struggling, long before it stops cooling.
  • Pressures only make sense alongside temperatures. A tech who checks superheat or subcooling can tell you whether the refrigerant charge is right, instead of guessing and topping it off.

What does an HVAC technician check on an AC condenser?

The electrical parts first: capacitor, contactor, wiring and amp draw on the compressor and fan motor. Then the coil for dirt and damage, the fan blade and motor, and refrigerant pressures with temperature readings to confirm the charge. They should also check that the unit sits level with clear space around it. You should get the readings, not just a pass.
