AC Replacement Surprises: The Pad Was the Real Project

AC replacement surprises usually sit under the unit rather than in it. Here two techs dig out cracked concrete and soil to get a new condenser sitting level on its risers.

What you’re seeing in this video

It's winter, and the new condenser is already sitting on the concrete patio beside the house, with a refrigerant recovery machine and its hoses parked nearby from pulling the old charge. Then the joke lands: the old pad underneath has cracked and settled.

Two techs, one in a black beanie and red gloves and one in a backward trucker cap, dig out broken concrete chunks and soil around the plastic riser legs that hold the unit up off the ground. The goal is a flat, solid base so the condenser sits level for the next 15 years.

Why it matters in your house

  • A condenser that tilts strains its refrigerant lines and can starve the compressor of oil. Manufacturers want the unit close to level for that reason.
  • If the old pad is cracked, sunk on one corner or holding water, point it out at the estimate. Pad work is easy to plan and annoying to discover.
  • Plastic risers lift the unit off a soggy patch so water drains away from the base and the coil stays clear of leaves and snow.

What problems come up during an AC replacement?

The usual ones are under or around the unit: a sunken or cracked pad, a rusted disconnect or whip, a line set that's too small or kinked, or an indoor drain line that never had a trap. None are rare. A tech who looks at all of it during the estimate can price it up front instead of surprising you on install day.
