AC Float Switch: How an EZ Trap Shuts the System Off

An AC float switch sits in the condensate drain and rises when water backs up. Once it trips, the system shuts off and the thermostat goes dark, so the clog stops your AC instead of soaking your ceiling.

What you’re seeing in this video

In a basement mechanical room, a SwiftPro tech in a black polo holds up a boxed EZ Trap, a clear condensate trap with an overflow switch built into the top. Behind him another tech in a black cap works at the evaporator coil cabinet sitting on top of the furnace, which is where the trap gets plumbed in.

He explains how it works. The trap connects to the coil's drain line, and a small pin at the top is wired to the system's board. When the drain clogs and water rises, a float lifts that trigger and the whole system shuts down, thermostat included. The point is a dead thermostat you notice, not a slow leak you don't.

What they say on camera

your AC unit, it drains about 5 to 20 gallons a day. But it tells you that you can do it for 5 to 20 gallons a day, depending on how often you're using your system, and also depending on the humidity in the house, and also just really hot days. If you have the system running all day, that can ruin this drain. The EZ Trap is a great tool to use in here.

You just connect it to the drain, and then it has this little pin at the top. And this is also connected to your board on your system. This gets clogged up. There's a little trigger here that pops up, and then it completely turns off the system.

Once it does that, it will turn off the thermostat, and it would explain to you, "Okay, now you have to come here and see what's going on." And then when you see this come up, just give us a call, we'll come out, and we'll clean the drain, or just see what's going on.

Why it matters in your house

  • If your AC and thermostat both go dead on a hot afternoon, check the trap or float switch at the indoor unit before you assume the system failed. Standing water there means a clogged drain.
  • A clear trap lets a tech see slime and debris building up during a tune-up, and it opens for cleaning without cutting the drain line apart.
  • Resetting a tripped float switch without clearing the drain only buys a few hours. The water has to go somewhere, so get the line flushed.

Why did my AC float switch shut off my air conditioner?

Because water backed up in the condensate drain far enough to lift the float, which is exactly its job. Usually the line is clogged with algae and dust. Clear the line, let the float drop, and the system comes back. If it keeps tripping, the drain may be sagging or undersized and needs a real fix.
