Plumber on the Roof: Your Neighborhood Plumber Clears a Clog From Above

A plumber on the roof is usually going in through the vent stack, the open pipe that pokes through your shingles. Here two plumbers feed a drain cable down that pipe to reach a hidden clog.

What you’re seeing in this video

The view starts from the roof, looking down at a SwiftPro van parked on a paver driveway. On the asphalt shingles, two techs set up a drain cleaning machine, one in a black long-sleeve shirt and gloves running it, the other, an older tech in glasses, keeping an eye on the line.

They feed the cable down the plumbing vent stack. That pipe lets air into your drain system so water flows freely, and from the roof it gives a straight shot down into the main drain when there's no handier cleanout inside.

Why it matters in your house

  • Gurgling drains, toilets that bubble when the tub empties, and sewer smells indoors can point to a blocked vent or a clog the vent can reach.
  • Going up through the vent is one access option, not the default. A pro picks the cleanout or vent that gets the cable closest to the clog with the least mess.
  • Roof work takes the right shoes, ladder setup and a second person. Clearing drains from the roof is a job to hand off, not a weekend project.

Why would a plumber need to go on the roof?

Usually to reach the drain system through the vent stack. If there's no accessible cleanout, or the clog sits in the vent itself, the roof gives a straight path down. Leaves, nests and debris can block a vent too, which slows drains and pulls water out of traps. That's when you hear gurgling.
