Mini Excavator Plumbing: Digging a Front Yard to the Line

Mini excavator plumbing is how a buried water or sewer line gets replaced without days of hand digging. The joke is a co-worker's first turn at the controls. The trench is real.

What you’re seeing in this video

A mini excavator cuts a trench across a front yard toward a split-level house. On the audio, someone is cheering on a co-worker who's just learned to run it: who's a big boy?

Techs in black jackets and red gloves stand down in the trench and on the lawn, and an orange ladder leans in the hole so they can climb in and out safely. A trench that deep needs a ladder close by, because you don't climb out up the dirt walls.

Work like this usually means the line between the street and the house, water coming in or sewer going out, has failed and is being replaced.

What they say on camera

This is what happens when you teach a co-worker how to drive a front end.

Why it matters in your house

  • Wet spots that won't dry, a sudden pressure drop or a water bill jump with no explanation are the usual signs an underground water line is leaking.
  • A machine digs faster and neater than shovels, and the soil gets set aside to go back in. Ask how the yard will be restored before the work starts.
  • Ask whether trenchless replacement is an option for your line. Some can be pulled or lined without an open trench. Some, like a collapsed run, need the dig.

Who is responsible for the water line in my yard?

In most places, the water utility owns the line up to the meter or the property line, and you own everything from there to the house. The sewer lateral running out to the street usually works the same way. When either one leaks or collapses on your side, the repair is yours, which is why it pays to know the signs early.
