Dog Bark Sounds Like a Drill When You Cut Sheet Metal All Day

Spend enough days cutting sheet metal and every dog bark sounds like a drill. The joke rides on real work: a tech cutting a duct opening into the top of an HVAC cabinet.

What you’re seeing in this video

The setting is a garage. A tech in a black cap and hoodie, tattoo sleeve on his forearm, runs a drill-powered metal shear across the sheet metal top of an HVAC cabinet. That shear attachment chews a clean line through steel, and it makes a sharp, choppy racket.

That racket is the punchline, because the bark and the shear really do sound alike. What he's cutting is the opening where the duct or plenum will attach, the box that sends air out to the rest of the house.

Why it matters in your house

  • The opening has to match the duct it feeds. Cut it too small and the blower pushes against a choke point, which means louder air and less of it reaching your rooms.
  • Cut edges get folded or flanged and then sealed. Raw edges left open leak air into the garage instead of carrying it to the bedrooms.
  • If your dog reacts to noise, put it in a closed room during an install so it isn't underfoot while someone's carrying a sharp sheet of metal.

Why do HVAC installers cut into the top of the furnace or air handler?

That's where the supply air leaves the unit. The installer cuts an opening sized to the plenum or duct, bends the edges so the connection overlaps, then fastens and seals it. Getting that cut right is part of matching new equipment to the ductwork you already have.
