What you’re seeing in this video

The camera starts tight on the elbow, the bend where the duct changes direction. The dust on its walls has built into a lumpy crust, and in spots it has cracked and fallen away to show the bluish metal underneath.

Then it looks past the turn, down the trunk beyond. Every wall of that run is grey, and a soft layer lines the floor all the way to the far end.

It's an eight-second phone clip from a July job. Forty-one minutes later on the same job, another clip looks down a supply trunk with a loose canvas connector at its mouth.

Why it matters in your house

  • Elbows are the first spot to check. Pull a register, shine a flashlight toward the nearest bend, and a fuzzy layer there is a fair preview of the runs you can't see.
  • Buildup this thick at a turn narrows the path the air has to squeeze through. Less of it reaches the rooms at the end of that run, and the system runs longer to make up for it.
  • Dust packed into a crust like this won't vacuum off by itself. It has to be scrubbed loose right at the bend, which is why the agitation tools ride on lines flexible enough to follow a turn.
