The 30-day clock
If your device fails, Loudoun Water gives you 30 days from its notice to repair and retest. Most failures are a rebuild kit, so we fix and retest on the same visit and the clock never starts.
Loudoun Water gives a failed device 30 days to be repaired and retested, and Leesburg wants residential irrigation results by June 1 every year. We test in about 30 minutes, fix failures on the same visit, and file the report so the deadline never becomes your problem.

Why you got the letter
Loudoun Water requires an annual test by a certified tester on every testable device, and it adds two rules most homeowners learn the hard way: a failed device has 30 days to be repaired and retested, and an irrigation device that was removed for winterization has to be retested when it goes back in.

Pulling the PVB indoors for the winter protects it from freezing, but Loudoun Water requires a new test when it’s reinstalled. Draining it in place and covering it avoids the extra test.
Inside the Town of Leesburg, residential irrigation test results are due to the Town by June 1 every year, and a failed device needs a passing report within 15 days. Spring is the season to book.
What to expect
Online or one call. Tell us how many devices you have and which utility sent the letter; commercial properties with a whole list are welcome.
Your tester connects a calibrated gauge, isolates the device for a few minutes, and verifies every check valve and relief valve holds the line.
We submit the passing result to your water authority and leave you a copy for your records.
Most failures are rebuildable. We quote the fix before we start, repair or replace, retest, and file the passing result.
The number one killer of backflow preventers here is winter. An above-ground PVB that wasn’t drained in the fall can crack from the inside when trapped water freezes. If your sprinkler system skipped winterization last year, book the test now instead of waiting for the notice. How to winterize it.

Your utility’s rules
Every program comes from the same Virginia regulation, but each utility runs its own paperwork and deadlines. We work with all of them, and the full Northern Virginia grid is on our main backflow page.
Annual test by a certified tester. A failed device has 30 days to be repaired and retested, and irrigation devices pulled for winterization must be retested when they go back in.

Ashburn homeowners are on Loudoun Water’s program. We’ve served Ashburn backflow work from the start; our Ashburn backflow page has the neighborhood detail.
Questions we hear every week
30 days. Loudoun Water requires a failed device to be repaired and retested within 30 days of Loudoun Water’s notice. SwiftPro repairs and retests on the same visit wherever the device is rebuildable.
Residential irrigation results are due to the Town of Leesburg by June 1 every year. If the device fails, a passing report is due within 15 days.
Only if it was removed. Loudoun Water requires any irrigation backflow device taken off for winterization to be retested when reinstalled. A device drained and covered in place doesn’t trigger that rule.
About 30 minutes per device. Your water is off for a few of those minutes while the gauge readings are taken, and that’s the whole disruption.
Virginia is strict about this. Since January 1, 2023, the state only accepts tests performed by a certified Backflow Prevention Device Worker, a DPOR tradesman certification, and some counties add their own registration rules on top. A test that doesn’t meet those rules is void and has to be redone.
Most failures are rebuildable: worn check springs, debris in a seat, or a body cracked by a hard freeze. We quote the fix before we start, repair or replace it, retest, and handle the paperwork.
A flat per-device price we quote when you book, no trip-fee surprise. Testing is the inexpensive end of plumbing work; the expensive path is ignoring the notice until the utility acts.
